Raghunath Murmu was brought born in Dandbose village which is 6.4 km from Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj State (presently in Odisha) on 5 or 18 May 1905 (Baisat Kunami). His dad, Nandlal Murmu, was town head and his fatherly uncle was Munsi in the court of King Pratap Chandra Bhanjdeo Chandra. In 1912, he began his schooling at the Odia-language in Gambharia Primary School, 3 km from his town. During his investigations he asked for what reason was the school not working in the language in which he spoke, Santali. In 1914, he was conceded to Bahalda Primary School, 7 km from his town. In secondary school at Baripada, he needed to go Kapi Buru for secret examination.
